Gayle "Garn" Ewin Gayle Ewin, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away at Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at the age of 73 years. Gayle was born in Bentley, AB on June 7, 1941. In the fall of 1959, she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) where she met her future husband John Ewin. They married on July 8, 1961 and raised five children while living overseas (France) as well as in Canada. As Gayle’s grandchildren started to arrive, she became known as Gran. However, in 1990, “Gran” turned into “Garn” when her granddaughter, Katie, would draw her grandmother pictures and misspell “Gran” when writing "To Garn, Love Katie". As a member of Forbes Presbyterian Church, Gayle acted as an elder, was on the Board of Managers and later on Assembly Council for two 3-year terms. She worked at the local food bank and started the mission “Project Fit” (Families in Transition), which is still in operation. Gayle was also very involved in Kairos (peace and justice group) working tirelessly on native issues. Gayle loved the outdoors and had a passion for fishing, camping and gardening. She enjoyed watching all types of sports and coached hockey when her sons were young. She was known for her insatiable appetite for books and jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Gayle had a loving and giving nature and her family and community were very important to her. Gayle leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her devoted husband of 53 years, John Ewin; her five children: Kim (Rick) Ewin-Goebel of London, ON; Kelly (Shawn) Pollard of Whitehorse, YT; Kris (Ron) Scott of Grande Prairie, AB; James (Alexa) Ewin of Calgary, AB and Eric (Christine) Ewin of Calgary, AB; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and siblings: Clayton (Francy) Lofgren, Newton (Greta) Lofgren and Joanne (Dick) Bornholdt. Gayle is predeceased by her parents, Leonard and Ruby Lofgren; brothers Gary and Curtis Lofgren and nephew Mick Anderton. The family wishes to extend their gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Points West Hospice in Grande Prairie, the Grande Prairie Cancer Centre and Grande Prairie Home Care Nurses, particularly Marie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Gayle Ewin may be made to Forbes Presbyterian Church Building Fund (9635 76 Ave, Grande Prairie AB, T8V 5B3) or a charity of one’s choice. Cremation has taken place. A service for the celebration of Gayle’s life and the interment at Glen Leslie Cemetery will both be announced at a later date.
