John Alexander "Jock" McDonald
Farewell to a pioneer

   Born on his father's farm in the Langside, Ont. district Jan 31, 1887, into a family which would include four sisters and three brothers. Mr. McDonald ventured west in 1910 as far as Saskatchewan where, as an industrious young carpenter, he helped construct buildings in that province's expanding frontier before striking out along the Edson Trail into the Peace Country in 1911 with his brother Dr. Alex Forbes and T.A.    Shortly after arriving, "Jock" filed on the NE 32-71-4-W6, ten miles east of the future hamlet of Grande Prairie in the area to become known as the Crystal Creek district. The summers were busy with homestead duties required for proving up, but winter's were spent at end of steel at Edson in the round house, working for means to aquire stock and equipment for his fast developing farm_
   The Martin Clarkson family of Chilliwack, B.C, moved into the community in 1919 and three years later, Dec. 20, 1922, Jennie Clarkson became the bride of Mr. McDonald. Together they expanded their holdings to a section, their mixed farming operations one of the most productive in the district,
   During those years, Jock McDonald also found time to serve his community on the school board. and was a member of the UFA local arid Wheal Pool.
   In 1954 the Couple retired to Grande Prairie, their sons Donald, and Bruce carrying on the farm. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house in December.
   In addition to their sons, two daughters where born to Mr. and Mrs. McDonald: Lena (Mrs. Jack Moon) who. predeceased her

McDONALD, Helen Agnes: July 4, 1932 - November 13, 2017 {Also on Bakkehaug grave stone page}

McDONALD, Helen Agnes
   It is with love that we share the news of the passing of Helen McDonald (Bakkehaug) on November 13, 2017 at Points West Hospice surrounded by family. Helen Agnes McDonald was born on July 4, 1932 at Poplar Hill, Alberta in a tiny farmhouse. She was the third child of five siblings of Einar Konrad Olsen Bakkehaug and Ingebjorg Bakkehaug. Helen was raised in the Valhalla area along with her siblings on a farm and schooled at Poplar Hill. She worked at the Grande Prairie Hospital as a ward aid and later volunteered at the hospital as well.
   She met the love of her life at a dance at the Crystal Creek Hall on May 2, 1951, Robert (Bruce) McDonald. Bruce and Helen were married two years later on June 12, 1953. They established their home east of Grande Prairie near the Crystal Creek Hall where they raised five children. Family was her pride and joy; for whom she loved baking countless loaves of homemade bread, buns, pies, jams, cookies, squares, you name it. Helen spent many hours baking with her grandkids making Lefse and any other items the kids requested. All guests who visited the McDonald home were welcomed with a smile and got to benefit from Helen's fantastic baking. The memories of jumping off the school bus to the smell of fresh baked bread will always bring a smile to our faces. Other passions include knitting and crocheting mittens, sweaters, toques, afghans, socks, slippers, and baby blankets for her grandchildren. Helen was naturally musical, playing the piano, guitar, harp, ukulele, and mandolin for which she was self- taught.
   She was very proud of her garden, flowers and being able to provide a healthy meal for her family and friends. Helen and Bruce enjoyed travelling. Some of their favorite trips were to Norway, Alaska, Cuba, Mexico, to name a few along with several farm tours meeting new friends. Faith was a part of who she was, as one of Jehovah's Witnesses she studied and applied the bible principles which gave her inner peace and we take comfort knowing she is safe in God's' memory. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband Robert (Bruce) McDonald, five children: Janet Adams (Ron), daughters Mary and Tanya Sandford (Matt), Darrell McDonald, Gerald McDonald (Denise) and children Jennifer Young (Adam), Trena Shaw (Tom), Michelle Krawetz (Mike), and Tyler (Shelley), Shirley McDonald-Norton, sons Colton and Chance Norton, Ross McDonald (Sandy) and sons Braden, Devon and Tyson along with 6 step-grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Brother Ole (Tina), sister Jenny, brother-in-law Donald McDonald (Nancy), sister-in-law Margaret Ladwig and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her parents Einar and Ingebjorg Bakkehaug, her father and mother-in-law John and Jenny McDonald (Clarkson), two sisters, Helen (whom she was named after), and Irene, sister-in-law Lena Moon and brothers-in-law Jack Moon and Keith Ladwig,
   Please join us in celebrating Helen's life at the Five Mile Hall, on November 18, 2017 at 2:00 pm. A social gathering of the family and friends will follow. At family's request donations can be made to Alzheimers Society of Canada ( www.alzheimer.ca ) or a charity of one's choice.
   Special thanks to the staff at Points West Hospice for the wonderful care and love given during this difficult time.

MCDONALD, Donald Martin: January 8, 1926 - February 18, 2001 {also on Hutt grave stone page}

Donald Martin McDonald
   It is with sad hearts that the family of Donald Martin McDonald, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, formerly of the Crystal Creek area, announce his passing on Thursday, February 18, 2021, at the age of 95 years.
   Don was born in the Grande Prairie Hospital on January 8, 1926, to Jock and Jennie McDonald. He grew up on the family farm east of Grande Prairie with his siblings Lena (Jack) Moon, Bruce (Helen) and Margaret (Keith) Ladwig, which was homesteaded by his folks in 1911. Don went to school at Crystal Creek across from the homestead. He would come home for lunch each day. In Grade 10, he went to town to the Grande Prairie High School, and when he went home for lunch one harvest day, he never went back.
   He met Nancy Hutt at Pellerin’s Ice Cream Social, and they were married June 18, 1954.
   He was always a farmer, and in the early years, he horse logged in Clarkson Valley, ran a gravel crusher at Keg River and was a partner in Ken’s Trenching for 30 plus years. He actively farmed with Nancy and his family until 1990 and never missed co-piloting a combine during harvest until this past year. Don and Nancy lived in their farm home until Don was 90 years old.
   They had a summer home at Sturgeon Lake, which they greatly enjoyed with family and friends; as well as their winter home in Yuma, AZ.
   Don was loved and respected by many. His reflective nature and many years of life experiences gave him a special depth of wisdom. He loved to tease and be teased and especially enjoyed a good practical joke. His chuckle and little grin when you "got him" will be greatly missed. His handshake was his word.
   Don is survived by his partner and wife of 66 years, Nancy; children: Alex (Shelley) McDonald, Brenda (Lionel) Thomson, Barbara (Jim) Fitzpatrick, and Everett (Tina) McDonald; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; as well as special family Don and Cherrill Elliot.

Nancy Elizabeth McDonald
   On Sunday, August 28, 2022, our dear mother Nancy Elizabeth McDonald, passed away peacefully at the Prairie Lakes Seniors Community in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 87 years.
   Nancy Hutt was born in Grande Prairie on October 3, 1934, to Leonard and Ellen May (Broadbridge) Hutt. Nancy and her siblings were raised on a farm in the Five Mile District.
   After losing her mother at the young age of 6, Nancy turned to doing the chores outside, driving the horses, and anything that kept her in nature. She was very involved in community sports teams and was the pitcher for the 1949 Five Mile Creek baseball team. Nancy took pride in education, travelling into town to attend high school at the Wapiti Lodge Dormitory.
   Nancy met her partner in life, Donald McDonald, at Pellerin’s Ice Cream Social and they were married on June 18, 1954.
   Don and Nancy lived on the family farm until December 2015 when they moved into Grande Prairie. They had a summer home at Sturgeon Lake which they greatly enjoyed with family and friends, as well as a winter home in Yuma, AZ.
   Nancy loved to garden, knitting mitts and socks, sewing clothes which turned into many hours of quilting and hand quilting…distributing her warmth of cuddle quilts throughout her family, and of course amazing baking. The cookie jars were never empty, there was always a Velveeta box full of cookies to be found in any farm vehicle. Picking berries, gathering eggs, making butter from fresh cream, canning fruits and vegetables and fresh jelly and jams…truly a farmers’ best catch!
   Nancy strongly supported her community of Crystal Creek, was always up for a game of crib, and would have a care package ready for you if you stopped by the farm.
   Nancy is survived by her children: Alex (Shelley), Brenda (Lionel Thomson), Barbara (Jim Fitzpatrick), and Everett (Tina); 13 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren; sister Joyce Kimpe; sister-in-law Lillian Hutt; and special family Don and Cherrill Elliot.
