Wiebe, Helen: December 1, 1927 - September 21, 2025

Wiebe, Helen:
On September 21, 2025, at the age of 97, Helen Wiebe (nee Hamm) was reunited with her husband Bill after a long full life and a short illness.
Helen was born on December 1, 1927 in Schoenau, Ukraine, to Franz Martin Hamm and Maria Warkentin. She remembered her childhood as a time of poverty and political upheaval but also in a loving home where the family ties were made strong by the need to depend on each other. At age 16, she went to Germany to train as a teacher after the family escaped Stalinist Russia. A year later, an incident happened that she has referred back to many times over the past decades. She escaped across the Elbe River into what would become West Germany, with Russian soldiers shooting at her as she swam. She thought that day would be her last but marveled that she was blessed with 80 more good years.
After emigration to Canada in 1947, Helen completed her high school while learning English, and went on to become a registered nurse in Manitoba. It was during this time that she met Bill whom she married on December 13, 1958. Bill was completing his teaching certification in Winnipeg.    During this time Rob and Immie were born, and then three years later in Winnipegosis, Karen joined the family. The family moved to Alberta in 1964 where they eventually homesteaded in the Crooked Creek area and Helen worked as a nurse. Over the years, moves took them back to Manitoba, and to Squamish, BC, and eventually Bill’s love of the north took them back to Alberta where they farmed until Bill’s death in 1998. Helen then moved to Grande Prairie where she resided until her passing.
Helen’s greatest love was family. She showed her love through time spent with grandchildren, cooking and baking for family and friends. She placed great value on education and loved to read novels and poetry in multiple languages. Her unconditional love for her family and kindness to all who knew her will be remembered always.
Helen is survived by her son Rob (Lindy) Wiebe, daughters Immie (Mark) Larson, and Karen Wiebe; grandchildren Amber, Sam, Heather (Kiran), Megan (Peter), Rich, Jared, Kade, Rob, and Tobi; great grandchildren Kalena, Wesley, Miles, Lars, and Nicholas, brother John Hamm, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Bill Wiebe and brothers Neil and Franz Hamm, and sister Mary.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to all the staff at Wild Rose Manor and the Transition Care Unit and Prairie Lakes Hospice for their wonderful care.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM with viewing at 10:00 AM, on Monday September 29 at Mission Heights Church of Christ. Lunch and fellowship immediately following with Interment at Glen Leslie Cemetery at 2:15 PM.
