HAWRYLUK, Bohdan: 1920 - 1999 {also on Ford grave stone page}
Bohdan Hawryluk, 79, of Bezanson Bohdan was born on the Hawryluk homestead at Bezanson, to Ksenia and Michael Hawryluk, on May 17, 1920, seventy-nine years later, on Aug. 31, 1999 Bohdan passed away peacefully on that same farm after losing his battle with cancer. Bohdan was predeceased by his wife Ellen (nee Ford) and by his brother Peter Hawryluk and sisters Mary Naylor and Olha Warn. Bohdan was also predeceased by his son-in-law Terry Lock. Bohdan will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his children Maxine Robertson (Jim), Diane MacDonnell (Dave), Joyce Thompson (Tom), John Hawryluk (Marilyn), Penny Hawryluk (Laura), and his grandchildren; Deanna Reiswig (Brian), Jocelyn Lock, Shawndel Hawryluk, David Robertson, Kandis Lock, T.J. Hawryluk and his step-grandchildren Melanie, Tasha and Landon Thompson. He will also be missed by his sisters Annie Oe and Nellie Smashnuk, as well as his sisters and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews, good friends and neighbours. Bohdan farmed for most of his life except for a short stint in the army during World War II and later, after Ellen died, he worked for the Department of Highways, Dan's Construction and as a farmhand for G. Forrest. Bohdan was also a community minded person. He helped build the original section of the Bezanson Community Hall, as well as the curling rink. He served as school trustee in the '50s when the numerous small school districts were consolidated into larger ones under the county system. At one time Bohdan served as president of the West Smoky Legion Branch 244. He was also instrumental in getting electrical power onto the farms north of Bezanson. In his early years Bohdan tried his hand at bronc-busting in some of the Peace Country rodeos with his good friend Roger LaValley, Bohdan not only enjoyed riding horses, he enjoyed training them. In his younger years he often liked hunting along the banks of the Smoky with his friends. Although Bohdan no longer hunted these last few years he enjoyed helping get ready for hunting camp by driving in the team and wagon, or riding in on the quads, approving the campsite and offering advice in his quiet and humourous way. Bohdan also enjoyed his many trips to the Yukon and the territories and his many excursions to Lethbridge with his friend Tony. Bohdan was a jack-of-all trades as most farmers are. He was a mechanic, welder, plumber, trapper, farrier, blacksmith, gardener and carpenter. He could often be found helping family, friends and neighbours in any of those capacities. His desks, tables, picnic benches, curio cupboards, bookshelves, hope chests, video racks, vegetable boxes will be treasured keepsakes for many people. We're going to miss stopping by Bohdan's to get a board cut to the right length, for a cup of coffee and cookie, a crib game and a chat. We're going to miss the stories, poems, jokes and fun. The family extends a heartfelt invitation to all family, friends and neighbours to come and join in a celebration of Bohdan's life, as we say goodbye to him at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999 at the Robertson-Hawryluk farm at Bezanson. If the weather is inclement the celebration will he held at the Bezanson Community Church. Interment will follow at the Glen Leslie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Peace Wapiti Education Foundation would be thankfully appreciated. HAWRYLUK, Penny Lee: November 20, 1961 - August 17, 2020
Penny Hawryluk Penny Lee Hawryluk, longtime resident of Grande Prairie, AB and Bezanson, AB, passed away Monday, August 17, 2020, at the age of 58 years, at Prairie Lake Hospice, with her sister Joyce by her side. Although our hearts are breaking at the thought that our “Princess Penny” will no longer be with us, we are relieved that she is no longer suffering the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s. Penny was born November 20, 1961 in Grande Prairie and grew up on the family farm in Bezanson. At age eight, she attended a school for special needs in Grande Prairie, The Peace School of Hope. Penny resided at The Barry Dale Home through the week and returned home to Bezanson on weekends and holidays. This was a positive experience for Penny in most ways, as she formed lifelong friendships and was part of a large network and community of special needs friends. Penny lived a happy, carefree childhood at home on the farm where she was loved and cherished by her whole family. The fact that Penny had Down Syndrome never held her back, even though it made our life’s journey together more challenging. Penny’s cheerful, sunny nature, sense of humour and fun, love of music and dancing, joy in spending time with family and friends, capacity to whole heartedly forgive, propensity to operate only on “Penny time”, funny little giggle, and infectious smile will always remain in our hearts. She will be lovingly remembered by her sisters: Maxine (Jim) Robertson, Diane (Dave) MacDonnell, and Joyce (Tom) Thompson; brother John (Marilyn) Hawryluk; nieces and nephews: Deanna (Brian) Reiswig, David (Erika) Robertson, Jocelyn (Jim) Plakas-Lock, Kandis (Chad) Lock-Delorey, Shawndel Hawryluk, and T.J. (Julie) Hawryluk; step-nieces and nephews: Melanie (Chris) Fix, Tasha (Keir) McIntyre and Landon (Kate) Thompson; great-nieces and nephews; her Group Home Family; as well as many cousins and friends. Penny was predeceased by her parents Bohdan and Ellen (nee Ford) Hawryluk, brother in-law Terry Lock, and her best friend and longtime roommate Laura Nadu. Penny’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. at Oliver’s Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Glen Leslie Cemetery.
