Anastazia (Nellie) Smashnuk April 11, 1923 - March 19, 2010 Nellie Smashnuk, longtime resident of Grande Prairie and area, passed away peacefully at the Q.E.II Hospital in Grande Prairie with family by her side on March 19, 2010 at the age of 85 years. Nellie was born and raised in Bezanson, AB, resided six years in Beaverlodge and lived in Grande Prairie the rest of her life. She was a loving, devoted mother. Nellie was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, needlework, and playing cards. Each one of the family has a keepsake lovingly crafted by Mom / Grandma. She could finish any jigsaw puzzle in record time. The Edmonton Oilers have lost an avid fan. Nellie is lovingly remembered by her family, four sons, Charlie (Yvette) of Sudbury, ON, Bruce (Linda) of Edmonton, Lawrey (Ethel) of Mississauga, ON and Michael of Grande Prairie, two daughters, Janet (Dave) Lougheed of Grande Prairie and Lyla (Don) McLaren of Calgary; 17 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, Doreen Semotonk of Calgary, Marge Smashnuk of Dawson Creek and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her three sisters and two brothers. Funeral Services will be held at the St. Paul's United Church, 10206-100 Avenue, Grande Prairie, on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Mary Blackburn Officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in memory of Nellie may be made to a charity of one's choice. SMASHNUK, Nicholas: 1918 - 1998
Nicholas Smashnuk, 80, of Grande Prairie On Sunday, October 18, 1998, Nicholas Smashnuk, resident of Grande Prairie, Alta., passed away quietly at the age of 80 years. Nicholas was born on January 23, 1918 in Andrew, Alta., to Peter and Lena Smashnuk. At the age of three he moved to the Peace Country with his parents, who came to homestead in the Bezanson area. He was involved in the Beaverlodge and Grande Prairie areas for many years with bands, playing his banjo at sports days and dances. He was an employee of the City of Grande Prairie as the plumbing inspector until his retirement in 1983, upon which time he moved to Heritage Lodge where he resided until his passing. Nicholas is survived by his children: Janet (David) Lougheed of Grande Prairie, Charlie (Yvette) of Sudbury, On., Lyla (Don) McLaren of Calgary, Bruce (Linda) of St. Albert, Lawrey (Ethel) of Toronto, Michael (Rae) of St. Albert; 15 grandchildren and Four great-grandchildren; three brothers; three sisters, numerous nieces, nephews and Friends. Funeral service will he held on Thursday, October 22, 1998 at 2 p.m. from St. Paul's United Church, 10206-100 Avenue, Grande Prairie, with interment to Follow in the Glen Leslie Cemetery. SMASHNUK, Peter: 1889 - 1975
Peter Smashnuk Mr. Smashnuk was born in Austria and came to Canada in 1911, settling in the Andrew district, moving to Bezanson in 1921 where he farmed until 1950 when he moved to Fort St, John. In 1974 he returned to Grande Prairie where he resided until his passing. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Lene, four sons: Nick of Grande Prairie, Eli of Wembley, George of Victoria, Leon of Dawson Creek, 3 daughters: Mrs. Cecil (Dorothy) Pickello of Fort St. John, Mrs. Earl (Mary) Norton of Grande Prairie, and Mrs. Norman (Dorothy) Semotonk of Calgary, 36 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by four sons, Harry and Donald of Bezanson and William and Paul overseas during the Second World War. Funeral services will be held from the Oliver Funeral Chapel on February 1, 1975 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Lou Rivers officiating, interment will follow in the Glen Leslie Cemetery.
