STEEVES, Herb: September 17, 1925 - September 19, 2004

Herbert Guy Steeves, 79, of Grande Prairie
Herb served in the American Airforce from 1942 - 1945, completed four combat missions as a gunner, was shot down on two of them and received the purple heart!
Passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2004, Herb succumbed to a long and fierce struggle with cancer, which he battled bravely to the end!
Born in Springhill, Pennsylvania in 1925, Herb and his family emigrated to Canada in 1926 to homestead around the Teepee Creek area. Herb had a long and varied life which spanned many careers and occupations. Herb was a devoted husband to wife Anna and a supportive and inspirational father to his three children Marjorie, Dennis and Lloyd. Tragically Herb was predeceased by his son Dennis in 1986. As a farmer, carpenter, truck-driver, businessman, and dedicated Department of Highways employee he gave it his all! He was well known as "Safety Herb"!
Herb and Anna worked tirelessly to establish the HillSide Community Association to develop the facilities within that area. Herb was very involved with the development and vision for parks in Grande Prairie as a member of the parks board. He enjoyed coaching baseball, building boats and RVs and spent as much time as possible camping and trekking around the bush. The family is proud of the legacy Herb has left behind in Grande Prairie.
Herb was dedicated to his family and extended family. At one point Herb went to the Chapel in Calgary and prayed to take on the cancer of his young granddaughter Anna-Marie, to spare her life. Having lost his mother early in life, he spent many years devoted to the caring of Alma Meyers, mother of Anna, whom he adopted as his Mom. Herb is survived by his loving wife Anna of 53 years, his loving son and daughter and their families; Lloyd Steeves and partner Donna Briggs, Marjorie Steeves-Campbell and husband Ron Campbell and their children Anna-Marie Steeves and her partner Keith Sankovic, Courtney Steeves and friend Kaylene, Ashley Steeves  and her partner Renee Chamberlain.
Herb is survived by his sister Lucille Gaboury, her husband Bud and his brother Bill.
Herb was predeceased by his sister Edith and brothers Harold and Clarence.
Herb will be fondly missed by many close nieces and nephews.
